FAAN MD Olubunmi Kuku Strengthens Nigeria’s Global Aviation Influence at ACI Meeting in Milan

By Nnamdi Nwankwo

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a significant step onto the global aviation stage as its Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, assumed her role as Regional Adviser for Africa at the Airports Council International (ACI) World Governing Board (WGB).

The high-profile meeting, held in Milan, Italy, on March 27, 2025, brought together key aviation leaders to discuss the future of the industry, particularly in the areas of capacity building, sustainability, and policy development. Mrs. Kuku’s participation marks a defining moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector, reinforcing the country’s growing influence in shaping international airport operations.

The nomination, which took place at the ACI Africa Conference in Johannesburg in September 2024, was a recognition of FAAN’s expanding leadership in regional aviation. Welcoming Mrs. Kuku to the board, ACI World Governing Board Chair, Mrs. Candice McGraw, emphasized the increasing significance of Africa in global air transport and commended Nigeria’s contributions to aviation progress on the continent.

The ACI World Governing Board, consisting of 28 CEOs representing different regions, plays a pivotal role in defining strategic directions for airports worldwide. With her new position, Mrs. Kuku is set to bring an African perspective to global aviation policies, ensuring that the challenges and opportunities within the continent’s airport industry remain a key part of international conversations.

Notable figures, such as ACI Africa Secretary General Mr. Ali Tounsi and ACI World Director General Mr. Justin Erbacci, participated in the meeting. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between regions, improving airport infrastructure, and advancing policies that drive sustainable growth in aviation.

The inclusion of FAAN’s leadership in this global forum signifies more than just an individual achievement it reflects Nigeria’s growing role in the evolution of the aviation industry. As Africa continues to rise as a critical player in global air travel, this appointment presents an opportunity for stronger partnerships, innovation, and enhanced airport operations across the continent.
